What foods can we bring into Japan and China?

We talked to our tour guide and contact person for China, and she did not think it would be a problem at all to bring pre-packaged foods such as granola bars, peanut butter, crackers, snacks, etc.

What insurance do we need for personal instruments?

You are responsible for your own insurance for you personal instruments. By far the best method of insurance to pay for short term additional coverage with your homeowners policy. These items may already be covered.

What type of visa ("L" or "X") will New Trier students and chaperones be traveling with?

According to Qiumin Ji, our Chinese tour operator, we will obtain an "L" or "Tourist" visa instead of an "X" or "Student" visa, because we are visitors.  "Student" or "X" visas are issued to students who go to countries and stay for a long period of time to study in the institutions of that country.

Do the travelers need to have a visa?

Yes. We will provide all the forms to be filled out later, and our Chinese agent will be getting the visas for us. As mentioned in the tour handout, there will be a cost of $70 to be paid by the student to obtain a visa. DO NOTHING NOW.

Can the trip be charged on a credit card?

YES, the China Tour can be charged on either Visa or Mastercard. The transaction must be made in the bookstore. The payment must be made on or before February 1, 2000. Mr. Rosheger and the forms have been mailed to each family. Return completed forms to Mr. Warrick for processing with the bookstore. The least amount to be charged will be the total, minus the deposit and final payment (from which fund-raising will be deducted.

If we raise more than the final payment, can we get the difference back?

We will be keeping very careful books, and will issue checks for any overpayments if necessary.

Can a student attend summer school and still go on the trip?

No.  You can only miss three days of summer school and still receive credit for summer school classes. Going on the trip during summer school is not possible, unless you take a second semester summer school class which starts after we get back.

I missed the first parent-student meeting in November, how can I find out what happened?

A videotape was made of the entire meeting, which lasted approximately 75 minutes. Copies of the videotape may be borrowed from Mr. Rosheger or Mr. Warrick.

Will the travelers have an opportunity to learn Chinese before they go?

ABSOLUTELY! In fact, we plan one evening meeting a month for all travelers to study about China, the language, customs, manners with the Chinese and within our own group. Some of the meetings will be hosted by Mrs. Kessle, New Trier's Chinese teacher, and other people who have traveled or lived there. It would be impossible to make these meetings required, so we will depend on parents to see that your traveler attends or at least watches the videotape of  the meeting. A full schedule of meetings will be published.

Suggestion: It was suggested by Mr. Warrick that questions will be more quickly asked if submitted by email (using the write us link on the tour web page).

How long will materials remain on the web page?

There is no reason the information ever needs to be deleted. We plan to keep everything on the web until the web page is officially shut down.

Correction announced at the first parent-student meeting: Jazz Ensemble parents who donated $200 to be a Jazz Festival Co-Sponsor should only subtract $60 from their $200 donation for festival tickets (rather than $80 as published in handout #1) if they wish to reapply the remaining $140 donation to their trip deposit. You should notify Mr. Warrick in writing if you wish to do this.
