GENERAL CHINA TOUR MAILING (#2)

TO: All China Tour Participants
FROM: Jim Warrick and Peter Rosheger
DATE: March 1, 2000

General Mailing #2

Here is the latest...

1. Our first of three "China Information Meetings" is now planned for MONDAY NIGHT (March 20) in room M387. We will have one evening meeting a month for 3 months to see videos, learn some basic Chinese, and hear from people who have lived or worked in China. We hope everyone going on the trip will attend. The first meeting will feature a presentation by the orchestra director at Evanston High School and several of their orchestra students. They toured China last summer and have much to tell us. They will be followed by a"pot luck" dinner and a travel movie about China. Our tour operator will also be there to answer questions. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and we hope to finish by 8:15 p.m. ENCLOSED IS A FORM TO HELP ORGANIZE THE "POT LUCK" DINNER. RESPOND TO IT PROMPTLY.

2. The other two tour meetings are MONDAY, APRIL 24, and TUESDAY, MAY 23. The May 23rd meeting will be devoted to LEARNING CHINESE!

3. We have discovered a GREAT, 316-page, paperback book that we want EVERYONE GOING ON THE TOUR TO READ. We have purchased 35 copies and will be sending a list of groups of people that will share a book. After you read your book, give it to someone else in your group to read. The book is called "Culture Shock! A Guide to Customs and Etiquette in China." If we did not feel this was important we would not have gone to the trouble of obtaining these books. We ask parents to make sure this REQUIRED READING is done as soon as possible. This is necessary if everyone in each reading group is to have enough time to read this outstanding book.

4. If you haven't seen our remodeled China Tour Web Page... take a look. Tony Tang has put the two areas requiring a password in one section, and reduced the amount of information on the home page. There will soon be a special section added for our ONLINE AUCTION.

5. The Shure Microphone Company has donated $4,000 in cash and $2,000 in equipment to our tour. They will also be providing one or two very special tour shirts for everyone going on the tour embroidered with their logo and other wording. We also have received a sizable donations from the Rotary Club of Winnetka. (More details to follow.)

6. In the FUND RAISING link on our tour webpage, we have listed all the prizes received to date for the ONLINE AUCTION and the WEIGH TO GO CONTEST. Garrett Ash has already sold 40 CDs, bringing his tour cost down by $400, and lowering the cost of EVERY STUDENT by several dollars. EVERYONE needs to help to make the trip costs lower. Do not depend on others to do your part. A current prize list (copied off the tour webpage) is enclosed.

7. We have special envelopes for turning in your money from CD sales or the WEIGH TO GO contest. Those envelopes should be turned in to Mr. Rosheger and they are available on his office door.

8. We have placed special CHINA TOUR CD displays in stores that will sell them for us. Please contact Kathy Bernstein by e-mail at Kadventure@aol.com or via phone: 256-8035 with any contacts you have regarding possible retail display/distribution of our China Tour CDs. We have display boxes and CD's available immediately to place in stores, and we are anxious for the exposure and increased sales. We have 2,000 CDs to sell and EVERY SALE LOWERS YOUR TRIP COST!!!.

9. We are now working hard with our Tour Operator to define a very specific itinerary, including specific flight times, etc. We are not ready to announce these specifics until they are solid. Keep an eye on the ITINERARY link on our tour webpage.

10. The Jazz Festival video archive files are online now. Go to http://ntjazz.com and follow the link. Such files will be available after the Spring Orchestra Concert, since it too will be broadcast over the Internet.

11. We now have 102 people going on this tour. We are at capacity.
