Our
air transportation to China has been booked. We are flying on Northwest
Airlines
to Detroit. After a change of planes (747 with American
pilots), we fly direct to Beijing.
At
the December 13, 1999 meeting of the New Trier Township School Board,
the China Tour Proposal was unanimously accepted! Let's get on
with the fund raising and leap forward to receive our shots! (An
edited version of the formal proposal distributed and voted on by the Board
is posted. It is the most brief written presentation of our
tour published so far.)

This web
site will be the primary source for communication before and
DURING the tour of China. We encourage
you to share this web site address with friends around Chicago and the
rest of the world.
Explore the New
Trier Jazz Studies web site. It has served over 30,000
"visits" since it was launched in October 1998 and is also the source for watching the
webcasts of all Jazz
Ensemble concerts and this season's Spring Orchestra
Concert.
Anything
added to the China Tour page will be mentioned here.
Chick
Corea and Gary Burton have agreed to perform their
Grammy-winning DUET in a benefit concert on behalf of our China
Tour Fund. The concert will be Saturday, April 29, 2000, at
7:30 p.m.
For ticket information.
IMMUNIZATIONS
According
to our Tour Physician...
"Everyone
should get vaccinated for Hepatitis A. This consists of two
injections, six months apart. The first injection should be at
least 4-6 weeks before we leave. It will provide protection. The
second injection, 6 months later, can be given before or after we
return and will provide long lasting protection.
Typhoid is optional, but I think it would be advisable for
everyone. It is available either as an injection or an oral
capsule, 4 doses given every other day over the course of a week.
This should be given at least 4-6 weeks before departure.
Everyone should have had a Tetanus booster within the past ten
years. Hepatitis B is not essential, due to the low risk.
Our main risk is likely to be traveler's diarrhea. Cipro (500 mg
twice daily) is a good antibiotic to treat this. Everyone should
bring their own antibiotic as well as Immodium (anti-diarrheal)
for symptomatic treatment. It may be difficult to find
Western medicines in Chinese pharmacies, so each traveler should
bring their own supply of cold medications such as Tylenol and
Sudafed, etc. Any illness should be reported to me so I can assist
in monitoring the use of medications. Of course, all medical
issues will be kept confidential. All of these issues should
be discussed with each traveler's personal physician."

Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble rehearsals on that
day. We will have
passport applications for those who need them. Visa application will be made later.
