Allan Horney
Allan L. Horney is Professor of Trombone and Jazz
Studies at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. In addition to applied trombone and euphonium, he
teaches arranging courses, jazz methods and supervises student teachers in music. As a composer-arranger,
Mr. Horney has written works for jazz ensemble, marching band, orchestra, solo trombone, and piano.
He has published over 25 works for jazz ensemble and marching band, including the 1998 IMEA required jazz
ensemble piece, “Minority Ruling”. Since 1977, he has been the arranger for the Marching Illini of the
University of Illinois and writes for numerous university marching bands. As a trombonist, Mr.
Horney has performed with the numerous big bands and solo artists and currnetly performs with the Eastern
Brass Quintet. Mr. Horney led EIU’s award winning jazz program for 21 years. Under his direction, the
EIU Jazz Ensemble was awarded two outstanding performance citations at the Notre Dame Collegiate
Jazz Festival, and in 1990 won Downbeat Magazine’s coveted DB Award for best big band recording in the
U.S. Its first CD, Eastern Time Zone was released in 1993. He has two new publications for jazz ensemble
which will be released in October, 1999. Mr. Horney received an undergraduate degree from Indiana State
University, with masters and doctoral work from the University of
Illinois.
