Clinician: Dave Ness
David
Ness, B.M. Northern Illinois University; M.M. Northwestern University,
is a freelance musician in the Chicago area.
He is teaching improvisation at Northwestern University in the fall
of 2001. He is also currently
the guitar instructor at Carthage College and Judson College. He has
taught general music to grades K-8 for Des Plaines District 62. In
the past he has been a Jazz Band and Jazz Combo director at Stevenson High
School in Lincolnshire, IL and was the guitar instructor at Morton West
High School in Berwyn, IL. For the past four years he has been an
instructor at Northwestern University's National High School Music
Institute. Dave has also been an instructor and assistant camp
director of Northern Illinois University's jazz camp. While at
Northwestern, Dave directed the Jazz Lab Band. He has been a
clinician for District 62, District 125, and District 79 in Illinois, as
well as the Illinois Music Educators Association Conference. Dave is
featured on recordings on Southport Records and has arranged music for
Danilo Perez, pianist; Shirley King, blues singer and daughter of B.B.
King; and Judy Roberts, pianist and vocalist. One of his
arrangements can be heard on Shirley King's album "Daughter of the
Blues." He recently finished three big band arrangements for
Tom Tallman's jazz ensemble at the College of DuPage. The three
arrangements are arrangements of tunes from Freddie Green's small group
album "Mr. Rhythm." His article on guitarist Freddie Green
can be found in the November 1999 edition of the International Association
of Jazz Educators Journal. He regularly can be found performing in
the Chicago area in classical, latin, and jazz groups. His website can be
