JOHN YAO
John Yao graduated
from New Trier High School in 1995 and then attended Indiana
University. At Indiana, he studied jazz with Professor David Baker,
Dominic Spera, Pat Harbison and Luke Gillespie. His trombone teachers
include Edwin Anderson, M. Dee Stewart, and Scott Hartman. While at
Indiana, John performed with guest artists Chris Potter, Gene DeNova, and
David Young.
In the summer of
1999 John played in the Orchestra for the Royal Caribbean Cruise ship
"Monarch of the Seas." After graduating in December of 1999 with
a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, he went on the road with the Glenn
Miller Orchestra, playing 2nd trombone. During his year and 3
months, the Miller Orchestra toured the United States as well as
six weeks in Japan. Including performances at concert halls in Tokyo,
Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kyoto and many other cites.
John currently lives
in Chicago, IL and is a freelance
trombonist performing at such venues as the Green Mill and working for
several bands of varying styles of jazz and latin music. He also teaches
private lessons and is an assistant director for the Freshmen Jazz
Ensemble at New Trier High School.
