DIRECTOR INFORMATION & FESTIVAL GUIDELINES ~ 2018 - Updated 9/25/17

ENTRANCE FORMS MAY BE SUBMITTED ONLINE BEGINNING AT 9:00 a.m. CST on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3rd 2017 AND WILL CONTINUE UNTIL ALL 40 PERFORMANCE SPACES ARE FILLED. AN ONLINE REGISTRATION LINK WILL APPEAR ON WWW.NTJAZZ.COM AT 9:00 A.M. CST, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3rd 2017. A waiting list will be maintained and posted for groups that enroll after all the performance spaces are filled.

Our festival’s purpose is to provide a positive, noncompetitive educational experience for inexperienced ensembles, or “second” ensembles from high schools with more than one jazz ensemble, or "First and only" jazz ensembles whose director considers them to be "inexperienced."  These ensembles often have few opportunities to perform outside their school district, benefit from the comments of great clinicians, or hear top college and professional big bands. These students can also gain the most from attending a "Special Interest Clinic" at our festival and hearing other young players. No director should disqualify their ensemble from participation in our festival because they feel it is not good enough. No attempt will be made to verify the correctness of any form and it is up to the directors to decide if their "1st and only" band is "inexperienced." We're on the honor system here. 

PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS MAY BRING TWO BANDS, PROVIDED NEITHER BAND IS YOUR SCHOOL'S "TOP" BAND. IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE FOR AS MANY SCHOOLS AS POSSIBLE, A SCHOOL'S SECOND BAND WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER REGISTRATION HAS BEEN OPEN FOR 24 HOURS. AFTER 24 HOURS, PRIORITY FOR REMAINING PERFORMANCE SPOTS WILL BE DETERMINED ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS. THE FIRST SCHOOLS TO REGISTER WILL BE INVITED TO BRING AN ADDITIONAL BAND.

IMPORTANT: It is necessary to limit the number of REDUCED PRICE EVENING CONCERT TICKETS ($20) we can sell to our guest schools to the number of students performing, and chaperone(s). We provide one or two complimentary director tickets. We cannot accommodate evening concert requests for reduced price tickets to bring additional non-performing bands or additional non-performing students from a school. Those non-performing students are welcome to attend the free daytime clinics and concerts, but if they wish to attend the evening concert they must pay for a full price ($30) a ticket. Those tickets must be ordered using the online application.


REGULAR FESTIVAL FEATURES

  • A video recording of your band performance if you perform in the auditorium. Auditorium performances are recorded in stereo using with more than 20 microphones and six camera angles. Bands performing in the auditorium will be broadcast LIVE on cable television to more than 40,000 homes, in stereo LIVE on North Shore Public Radio, and as a live webcast.

  • Every ensemble will receive a private clinic with an outstanding jazz educator, along with an audio file of their comments during your performance. 

  • If your band performs on the main stage you will use our drum set, bass amp, guitar amp, vibraphone, and piano, as well as timbales and congas. Please let me know if you have specific Latin percussion needs. 

  • If your band plays in a location other than our main stage, we will provide a drum set and piano. Bands must bring their own cymbals, guitar amps, and bass amps, along with all Latin percussion. 

  • Bands are strongly encouraged, but not required to stay for the evening concert featuring Delfeayo Marsalis presents the Uptown Jazz Orchestra. Please encourage your students to clear their schedules for the entire day. 

  • Two big band sight-reading sessions for junior high and high school musicians.

  • "Special Interest Clinics" on such topics as... "So you think you want to be a college music major," "The world of the touring jazz musician," "How to improvise," "How to compose music," "How to become a recording engineer, " "How to become a jingle writer for radio or TV" and others.

  • Instrumental master classes taught by members of The Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

  • Hear great professional and college groups during the day (The Marques Carroll Quintet and The University of Miami Frost Concert Jazz Band)

  • Directors Big Band comprised of our guest directors will perform on stage in the afternoon.


Format of our 35th Annual Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier High School:

1. Performance Locations:

Gaffney Auditorium (Main Stage) - 1,500 seat auditorium. You will warm up in a separate location.Your band will perform for two clinicians and will receive two clinician comment CDs, as well as one performance DVD shot with multiple cameras and stereo audio. Bands performing in Gaffney Auditorium must have 12 or more members. Only one band per school will be scheduled to perform in Gaffney Auditorium. You band will move to a different location to have a clinic with one of the two clinicians who heard your performance. Bands must perform using the traditional stacked horn setup, and will use New Trier's bass amp, guitar amp, drum set, vibraphones, and timbales. Students must bring their own cymbals and other Latin percussion. 

McGee Theater - 240 seat auditorium.You will warm up in a separate location. No sound system, but a great sounding space. Your band will perform for one clinician and then stay in the McGee Theater for your clinic. Bands must provide bass amp, guitar amp, and cymbals. We will provide a baby grand piano and drum set and hardware. We can provide a set of vibes and a small PA for vocalist if needed. 

Black Box Theater - typical black box theater space with high ceilings. You will warm up in a separate location. Bands must provide bass amp, guitar amp, and cymbals. We will provide a drums set and hardware, along with a piano. We can provide a set of vibes and a small PA for vocalist if needed. 

Orchestra Room - A very large space with high ceilings. You will warm up in a separate location. Bands must provide bass amp, guitar amp, and cymbals. We will provide a baby grand piano, drums set and hardware. We can provide a set of vibes and a small PA for vocalist if needed. 

W301 Meeting Room, W350 Meeting Room, W321 Meeting Room - Large meeting spaces on the third floor of our new building, fully accessible by elevator. Bands must provide bass amp, guitar amp, and cymbals. We will provide a piano, drums set and hardware. We can provide a set of vibes and a small PA for vocalist if needed. 

2.  Each jazz ensemble may perform three compositions or 20 minutes, whichever comes first. (Setup and teardown time is not included in this 18 minute period.) Keep in mind that the shorter time you play, the longer you will have in your private clinic.

3. Each participating school will be invited to bring one combo per participating band to perform for a combo clinician. However, combo space is limited and we cannot guarantee that we'll be able to accommodate all combos. Combos will be given performance times on a first come, first served basis. 

4. General schedule for the day:

8:00 am - breakfast sold in student cafeteria
8:30am - visiting school bands begin performing
11:00am - 3:00pm - Lunch available for purchase (directors receive complimentary lunch)
12:00pm - Professional small group performs on the main stage
12:40 pm - Special Interest Clinic and High School Sight-Reading Band
1:40 pm - Special Interest Clinic and Junior High Sight Reading Band
2:45pm - Jazz Director's Big Band
3:00 pm - instrument Master Classes with musicians from The Uptown Jazz Orchestra
4:00 pm - University of Miami Frost Concert Jazz Band
5:00pm - bands depart for dinner
7:30 pm - Evening concert with New Trier's Jazz Ensemble 1 and Delfeayo Marsalis presents The Uptown Jazz Orchestra

6.  PERFORMING STUDENTS and chaperones participating in the day’s activities are eligible to purchase $20 tickets to the evening concert if ordered and paid for by November 19th by their director. Each director will receive one complimentary ticket. Tickets for non-performing students and adults will be $30 each if ordered on the online application form. We are expecting this concert to sell out!

7.  Do not send your entrance fee when you register. You will be billed according to your performance location.

PARTICIPATION FEES

There are two participation fees for high school or junior high BIG BANDS, depending on where you perform. 

  • $275 fee to help cover your ensemble’s clinic expenses with televised and auditorium performances if you perform in Gaffney Auditorium (Main Stage).  
    OR
  • $250 fee to help cover your ensemble's clinic expenses if you perform any place other than the main stage.

NOTE: Ensembles that withdraw after DECEMBER 15, 2017, will forfeit their entire entrance fee. DO NOT SEND YOUR FEE UNTIL YOU ARE BILLED.
